The Pied Piper – Venezuela
July 2009
In a Venezuelan slum a young girl practices on her clarinet and dreams a big musical dream despite her family’s poverty. An inspirational story of the children living in squalor and danger in Latin America.
In Caracas, Venezuela where the streets thump with hip hop, Latin rhythms and violent crime, we are introduced to a remarkable project that’s brought more than a million kids into the world of classical music. The National Youth Orchestra System is designed to steer kids away from the life of drugs and crime that has gripped so many youngsters here. ‘The happiness, enjoyment and hope that practice in music brings to the poor neighbourhoods undoubtedly creates a tremendous barrier against drugs and violence’, says project founder Jose Abreu. Allowing these children to dare to dream about a classical music career gives the community hope, even though only a handful will ‘make it’. ‘The beauty of music is a daily antidote for the ugliness around them.’

@6025SW87AVE Like I …
@6025SW87AVE Like I said, I thought Venezuela was rich. Rich means there’s no poor. If there’s poor people in the country, the government should try create jobs, instead of wasting money for political reasons. I’m in no way supporter of giving anything to poor, people must Work for a living. I know one thing, most obese people here in US are poor ones, because the food is free for them, they don’t need to work.
Now I know Venez is not rich country.

@bbjagaa ; Just …
@bbjagaa ; Just because Venezuela might be rich…doesn’t mean, the Gov’t should nand out money and give the poor FREE homes and living . The poor are mostly inmigrants that come to Venez, looking for work. Like the U.S., you can go to any poor neighborhood in N.Y. Chicago and Other places , and go to immigrant areas of Calif. Florida, Texas etc…and you’ll see the same poverty…So , what was your point ?…
