India’s Free Lunch

Since 2001 all Indian primary schools have provided pupils with a free midday meal. Seven years on truancy rates have been slashed, and child health is soaring. Western governments are taking note.
“Compared to ours, today’s generation is better off,” explains a cook at one school we visited. Vijay Bhaskar agrees, he is the food administrator in Karnataka, and reveals, “the number of children out of school has reduced from 1 million to 70,000.” The scheme has also seen off the junk food industry, as Bhaskar comments, “any person who has seen children eating a hot meal knows that no cookie can substitute.”

  4. Every government …
Every government and its leaders have the solemn and sacred responsibility to provide for basic neccessities of life, such as fresh water, housing, a farming industry, roads, etc. These are the priorities, not party and national politics, defence budgets, and political and self aggrandisment. It grieves ones heart to see sad extreme poverty situations in places like Africa and India. Government must govern and organise for the benefit of the populace.

I just cant stop thinking “what else could be done if governments destinate just a little percentage of what they use for wars?”

I dont mean not to have an army, I dont mean not militarly protect their countries… but to care just a little bit about the basics of life.

This is a touchy documentary. It points how simple and small things can beat complex and big problems.

  9. That’s not India’s …
    That’s not India’s problem.

The problem is that India has a business climate hostile to foreign investment and not a favorable environment for small business to grow furthermore their government spends like crazy even though Indian hardly produces anything.

    India was once the …
India was once the richest country in the world… there was never a shortage of food in ancient India. Its sad to see how things have turned… I gaurentee you british colonization has a part of this. They looted all of India’s wealth… trillions and trillions were taken by british. Wait the day when India will be the most powerful nation on earth. When is India is powerful the whole world benifits with peace and harmony.

I am glad (very happy, indeed) of that 2food for all school children” policy. It will translate in a country which will burst of high IQ individuals from the less prividleged socio-economic groups. I wish you the best. All the best from Spain.

  20. Did the presenter …
Did the presenter says about Hare Krishna that they deliver Roti[Indian staple wheat bread which looks like tortilla] and MEAT [?] curry in North Indian state school?
I dont think thats right if thats what he said. Hare Krishna is pure vegetarian kitchen all over world as far as I know .

  21. may be this …
may be this generation of indians shown in the video may still live in poverty but i can guarantee that their kids or their grandkids will not live in poverty. India finally took the approach of having a tax system which made western countries to what they are today. If India had done what China did 40 years ago, today, India would be a wealthy country. Right up to the 1990s, India’s economic inefficiencies kept their people in poverty.
